Your 2-day Rwanda adventure begins upon arrival in Kigali, Rwanda’s vibrant capital. After meeting your guide at the airport or your hotel, you’ll embark on a scenic 2 to 3-hour drive to Volcanoes National Park, located in the northwest of the country. The drive will take you through rolling hills, picturesque countryside, and rural villages, offering you a glimpse of Rwanda’s natural beauty.
On the way, you may stop at local markets or cultural centers to learn more about Rwandan traditions and crafts. Upon arrival in the Volcanoes National Park area, you’ll check into your lodge near the park and have some time to relax.
In the evening, you’ll have a briefing about the gorilla trekking adventure ahead. This is a great opportunity to prepare yourself for the trek, learn about the park’s history, and ask any questions you may have.
Afterward, enjoy dinner at your lodge, surrounded by the serene beauty of the volcanic mountains. Get a good night’s sleep as you prepare for one of the most exciting wildlife encounters on Earth.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Your second day begins early with a hearty breakfast before heading to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing on the day’s trek. The park rangers will assign you to a specific gorilla family and give you information on how to behave in the presence of these gentle giants. Each trekking group consists of eight people and is accompanied by experienced guides and trackers who know the forest well.
The trek itself can last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family. As you hike through the dense forest and lush vegetation, you’ll pass through bamboo forests, open meadows, and sometimes steep terrain. The journey is challenging but incredibly rewarding, with the anticipation of encountering the gorillas driving you forward.
Once you find the gorillas, you’ll spend an unforgettable hour with them. Watch as the gorilla family interacts, with mothers tending to their babies, juveniles playing, and the massive silverback keeping a watchful eye. This close encounter with one of the world’s most endangered species in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
After your trek, you’ll return to the park headquarters and receive a certificate commemorating your successful gorilla trek. You will then be transferred back to Kigali, with an optional stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial or a local craft market if time permits.
